Palate Expanders
Sometimes a growing smile needs a little more room. A palate expander is an orthodontic appliance used to gently widen the upper jaw, helping create the space needed for healthy dental and jaw development.
Because a child’s jaws are still growing, expansion can allow us to address certain concerns at a time when the body can respond naturally to treatment.
Why Are Palate Expanders Used?
A palate expander may be recommended when the upper jaw is too narrow, there isn’t enough room for permanent teeth, or the upper and lower jaws aren’t fitting together properly.
Expansion can also be used to address certain crossbites and create more appropriate space for the teeth and tongue.
Benefits of Palatal Expansion
Creating additional space during growth may help permanent teeth come in more favorably, improve the relationship between the upper and lower jaws, and reduce crowding.
For some children, addressing a narrow upper jaw early may also make future orthodontic treatment simpler and more predictable.
